Film

During this time of Covid I thought to suggest a few Netflix films….

SPACE ODYSSEY 2001

Kubrick’s masterpiece is about intelligence. Human intelligence, the Artificial Intelligence of HAL, an unknown intelligence from space. Space Odyssey gives birth to a new life form, dare I say consciousness. Not as a direct consequence of the film but AI has emerged in earnest since. We have similar concerns about artificial super intelligence.

Black Mirror

A most excellent Netflix series ..

Social Dilemma

About social media. I am mostly positive about technology, I want to see how AI develops as it holds promise for our civilisation. The problem with social media is human. In life we seek public approval, now we can seek that from so many people through social media.

The Great Hack

About Cambridge Analytics involvement in Brexit and the election of Donald Trump. It shows how we are all vulnerable to influence, hacking. Persuadable people are influenced using social media. The biggest victim of this human hack has been truth.

Stateless

About illegal immigration to Australia, the boat people as they’re called. Stateless shows Australia’s immigration prisons for refugees. We don’t know the corruption and despair they are fleeing. The best solution would be to make every country livable and prevent human rights violations. People don’t choose to flee their home, they only do so out of fear.

Human Nature

Explores the ability to fabricate people with CRISPR.

Life On Our Planet

About the consequences of global warming and forecasts its effects 100 years hence. At the age of 93 Attenborough hopes we can survive this extinction level event caused by human activity. Attenborough tells us the success of planet Earth was it’s biodiversity which needs to be restored.

Rake

An excellent Australia comedy about a barrister, judgement and the self elevating use of the word correct. I think he got the cannibal off…

Cowspiracy

And the similar “Seaspiracy”, “What the Health” and “Game Changers” shows how human activity is killing the planet. How capitalism is the true cause of global warming, not electricity or cars. How eating meat causes many deaths and we would be healthier without. Better athletes are vegan. We are consumers slowly killing the planet.

Unbelievable

The Netflix series Unbelievable, based on a true story, is a powerful account of sexism. The physical and mental abuse of women. Many reports of rape by women to authorities and the world of men are not believed. Police often don’t take these crimes as seriously as others. The violation of a woman’s body extends to a mental one because of male belief.

Down to Earth

It seems the purpose of this Netflix series is to make public knowledge of issues facing humanity, especially global warming.

GATTACA

A relevant film during the time of CRISPR and DNA manipulation…
